Ever since I can remember entrepreneurship has been in my blood. I grew up that way. My dad was always in businesses and the thrill and fulfilment he got from his work enabled me to dream like he did. I was inspired. Admiring his ability to believe in himself.
And then I got comfortable. So comfortable that I stopped dreaming, stopped believing. I worked the traditional 9 to 5 and then I drank the other 5 to 9. Drinking my sorrows away of an unfulfilling life… but you see, I didn’t question it, because everyone around me was doing it. Though deep down within me, and probably within you somewhere, there was a nagging voice. A voice whispering at me, telling me to change direction but I didn’t listen. I didn’t move on life.
That’s when, a couple of months ago, life decided that I needed a wakeup call. Not a nice call, I’ll tell you. It was the type of call that begins with what the hell are you doing? No hello’s. No hi’s. No niceties. Just straight to the point. You see, life called me and said, Laurens you are retrenched, figure it out. My world was rocked. My confidence shot. I doubted my every move, asking myself what’s wrong with me? Am I broken? Am I not good enough?
I felt lost, but then that little whispering voice returned. The voice that I had supressed for so long got confidence and spoke a little louder. A little stronger. A little more hopeful. It said, FINALLY! I thought that was a bit rude, my life has just been thrown upside down.
But you know, there is a saying in life that says, you don’t know how strong you are until strong is the only choice you have. Strong was the only choice I had left. So I decided to brave the unknown and start my own business. Now, I had no idea how to run a business. I had no idea how to cold call. Jeez, I had no idea how to call someone up. I would say, Hi, I need money. And they would say, don’t we all. What services do you have? I said I’m still trying to figure it out. They said, stop wasting our time.
I didn’t think I would strong enough to face rejection after rejection. But you only know how strong you are when strong is the only choice you have. I can tell you know that when you house repayments or car repayments are due, you’re willing to get a couple of no’s. If food is running low and your torn to make a call or sit on your bum, I can tell you now making the call sounds like a pleasure. I remember one week where I closed 4 different clients that I had started off with cold calling. It took over 6 months, but dam it happened, and it can happen for you. Don’t ever think you are not strong enough to do something.
I learnt from this whole experience that sometimes if you don’t have the courage or insight to know that you have outgrown a situation, life will move on you. If you have something great to do. If you have that little voice that whispers there is something else for you to do… LISTEN, otherwise life will act on you. Get in front of life. Beat them to the finish line, life is going to see you standing at your dream saying, jeez you run fast. Get ahead of it.
Because at the end of the day, there is never a perfect time to live your dreams. There is a Chinese proverb that says, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is right now. I am grateful that I got the wakeup call I did. But also, I wish I took the leap before life so rudely rocked my world.
If you have that little voice. That voice that yearns for you to listen. That small dream that you cannot go a day without thinking about. That Picasso painting you can’t stop visualising. The acting career you can’t stop imaging. The starting your own business and creating financial freedom.
Then stop your secondary activities that are consuming your day and go out and MOVE ON LIFE. Because one day, your life is going to flash before your eyes, make sure it’s worth watching!
